Johnathan Crumley (Team Speights Black/Callaway HS/Jackson, MS) 2020 6’8 PF – Team Speights Black big man, Johnathan Crumley, had a strong showing at the Exposure Hoopfest in New Orleans. He used a combination of strength and finesse to dominate the paint. In his power game he had no problem banging opponents in the chest to create separation and knocking them off balance to convert his layup. However, Johnathan does have a soft touch around the rim and a short corner turnaround in his bag as well. For a man of his size he ran the floor well and scored several putbacks from trailing in transition. With moderate interest from Auburn, Southern Miss, and FAU, and offers like Jackson State on the table, we generally expect his recruitment to start to pick up fairly quickly.
Ashton Campbell (Dream Team Phenoms/Forrest County Agricultural HS/Hattiesburg, MS) 2020 6’0 G – One of the most impressive kids in the Exposure Hoopfest in New Orleans was Ashton Campbell. This Sports 601 Player of the Year averaged 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals during the high school season, all team highs, and scored 45 points in the game we watched, and we know exactly how he did it. With his shifty handles and quick change of pace this extremely athletic guard seemed virtually impossible to contain. As if his ability to get to the rim and finish with some awe-dropping athletic moves wasn’t a hard enough defensive assignment, Ashton is a certified bucket from anywhere on the floor, and we do mean anywhere. He had both his stop-and-pop and his long ball falling this weekend. This kid is special and if you are a college anywhere in the south, look this kid up and thank us later.
Joe Stubbs (Team Speights Elite/Santa Fe Catholic HS/Lakeland, FL) 2020 6’3 G – Joe Stubbs was one of the most athletically skilled finishers we observed at the Exposure Hoopfest in New Orleans. He’s an aggressor on both ends of the floor, locking down opponents on one end and taking it to the rack viciously looking for a victim to flush it on at the other end. But what makes Joe such a hard cover is the fact he cannot be given any space or he will burn you from beyond the arc. With Florida Gulf Coast and Florida A&M already hot on the trail, look for a few more offers to roll in this July for Mr. Joe Stubbs.
Ian Cavana (EP Elite/Catholic HS/Baton Rouge, LA) 2021 6’2 SG – There was a sniper in the building at the Exposure Hoopfest in New Orleans last weekend and he’s been identified as Ian Cavana. This kid in one game lit up the gym with 7 three-pointers that opened some eyes up at just how great this scoring threat can be. Not just because he’s an outstanding shooter from long range however, Ian also has a very good skillset, utilizes a pretty solid dribble pull-up from midrange, and is not afraid to finish at the rim. This kid will definitely be a player to watch out for in Baton Rouge.
Jaden Shelvin (LaFayette Celtics/St Thomas More/LaFayette, LA) 2021 6’1 G – Jaden Shelvin, a Class 4A All-State player for St. Thomas More, is a nice sized guard who can change the course of a game in just a couple of possessions. His aggressive nature and knack for scoring in bunches forced his opponents to change their defensive approach. He’s strong with the ball in his hands, even when facing heavy pressure, and blew by several defenders to finish at the rim while absorbing the bump. Jaden is also a smart player with a very accurate jumpshot, knowing the importance of great movement without the ball to make himself available.
